The ship was originally built in 1944 as a US Navy troopship, the USS General WP Richardson (AP-118). The ship was charted by American Export Lines and sailed as the ss La Guardia from 1949-1951, and then briefly served time as a troopship in the Korean War. It was sold to Hawaiian Cruise Lines in 1957 and operated as the Leilani until 1959. American President Lines bought the ship in 1960 and operated it as the President Roosevelt until 1970 when it was sold to Chandris and renamed the Atlantis. The ship was sold in 1972 and operated as the Emerald Seas until 1992 when it was sold to Festival Cruises and renamed the Sapphire Seas. The ship was finally scrapped in 2005 after 60 years of service.
