Vintage 8-panel 2-sided brochure from circa 1960-61 for the New York to South America 43 day cruises aboard the Argentina state-owned Argentine Lines (Empresa Lineas Maritimas Argentinas - ELMA) three sister ships Rio De La Plata, Rio Jachal, and Rio Tunuyan.
The southbound itinerary for the cruises was New York - Rio De Janeiro - Santos - Montevideo - Buenos Aires. The northbound trip was Buenos Aires - Santos - Rio De Janeiro - Trinidad - La Guayra - New York.
The brochure includes photos and descriptions of the ships and the cruise. The brochure has a large photo of the exterior of the Rio De La Plata, the outdoor swimming pool, staterooms and suites, the library, the dining room, and the bar.
Condition: The brochure is in very good condition (see photos).
Cruise ship history: The three sister ships were built during 1950-1951. The diesel powered motor vessels were 527 ft. long and 11,300 tons and carried 116 all First Class passengers. In 1962 the passenger capacity of the Rio De La Plata and Rio Tunuyan was increased to 370 Tourist Class passengers and the ships were moved to the Buenos Aires to Northern Europe route.
The Rio Jachal was damaged by a fire in 1962 and laid up. In 1968 it was again damaged by a fire and it was scrapped in 1970. The Rio De La Plata was destroyed by a fire in 1964 and scrapped in 1968. The Rio Tunuyan was laid up in 1972.
