Product Description

Late 1960's ship "personal facts folder" brochure for the 6 Chesapeake & Ohio Train and Auto Ferries ships on the cross Lake Michigan ferry service serving Milwaukee, Manitowoc, and Ludington. The small cardboard folder is 6 inches high x 4.25 inches wide.

Page 2 of the folder has drawings showing the 6 ships: ss Badger, ss Spartan, ss City of Midland, ss City of Saginaw, ss Pere Marquette 21, and ss Pere Marquette 22.

Page 3 has general facts and statistics on all the ships (and more detailed info on the Spartan and Badger).

Page 4 (the back page) has some general info on the ferry service.

The brochure is in overall good condition but the outlines of the ships on page 2 were drawn on by a child with a red pen (see photos)

The ss Badger is still in operation as of 2024 and is the last remaining Lake Michigan classic railroad car ferry.  Its sister ship the ss Spartan has been laid up in Ludington since 1979.  The 410 foot 4,244 ton ships were built in 1952.

The 406 ft. 3,968 ton ss City of Midland 41 sailed as a ferry from 1941 to 1988 when it was laid up.   In 1997 the ship was converted into a barge and renamed Pere Marquette 41.

The sister ships ss Pere Marquette 21 and ss Pere Marquette 22 were built in 1924 and withdrawn from service in 1971, and both ships were sold and converted to barges.

The ss City of Saginaw (369 feet, built in 1929) caught fire in 1971 and was scrapped.
