Product description

Early 1930's vintage 7-page brochure for Third Class travel on Cunard Line's Transatlantic Irish service to Galway and Cobh aboard its five intermediate class ocean liners Scythia, Franconia, Laconia, Samaria, and Carinthia.  The brochure was printed in the U.S. on June 12, 1933.

The brochure includes many photos and descriptions of the ships and their third class public areas and staterooms, and life aboard the ships during the Atlantic crossings.  Photos include exterior photos of the ship, Third Class Dining Room, Third Class Lounge, Third Class Smoking Room, Third Class Stateroom, and small sample lunch and dinner menu photos.

Condition: The brochure shows some wear.  There is a 4" split on the side seam (see photo blow), and the bottom 1/4 of the brochure has some light wrinkling, and page 6-7 has a thin red line near the bottom where the travel agent's stamp leaked through the pages (see photo below).

Ocean liner history: The five post WW1 intermediate size Cunard liners were built from 1921-1925.

The 19,761 ton RMS Scythia entered service in 1921 and sailed until 1958 when it was scrapped.  It was the second longest serving Cunard ship (surpassed only by the Queen Elizabeth 2).

The 19,602 ton RMS Samaria entered service in 1922 and sailed until 1956 when it was scrapped.

The 19,695 ton RMS Laconia entered service in 1922.  The ship served as a British troopship in World War II and in 1942 was sunk by a German U-boat with a loss of over 1,600 lives.

The 20,175 ton RMS Franconia entered service in 1922 and sailed until 1956 when it was scrapped.

The 20,277 ton 624 ft long RMS Carinthia entered service in 1925 and was the largest of the 5 ships.  The ship served in the British Royal Navy as an armed merchant cruiser and was an early casualty in the war, sinking in 1939 after being torpedoed by a German submarine.
