Antique lithograph postcard from 1908 showing members of the U.S. Life-Saving Service training for maritime rescues by firing a cannon with a life-line on the beach near Atlantic City, New Jersey. This postcard offers a rare and valuable glimpse into early 20th-century lifesaving practices and maritime safety efforts.
The United States Life-Saving Service was a US government agency formed in 1878 focused on coastal rescue operations and saving shipwrecked sailors and passengers. It merged with the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to form the present day United States Coast Guard.
The postcard was printed circa 1908.
The heavy cardstock postcard is used and stamped with a U.S. 1 cent stamp and postmarked July 10. The card has some horizontal postal cancellation marks on the front on the left side in the blue sky area but is otherwise in good condition (see photos).
