Vintage 30-strike matchbook cover (no matches) from the late 1950's advertising the now closed Francois' Manhattan Restaurant which was located at 1909 E 4th St in Long Beach, California.
The upscale restaurant opened in 1950 and specialized in Continental and American cuisine...and cocktails. After it closed in 1987 following a fire caused by arson, a Honduran restaurant opened in the space in 1992.
The front cover of the matchbook has the the restaurant logo and name. The strike side has the address. The inside says "unsurpassed Continental and American Cuisine,. Cocktails" and has the old-style phone number "HEmlock 6-0620".
At the bottom on the inside is the logo for Universal Match Co.'s "The Aristocrat" 30-strike matchbooks. Universal introduced the Artistocrat matchbooks in 1951.
The matchbook cover is in good condition with very light wear along the left side edge. It is empty and there are no matches, and the strike pad appears to be unused. (see photos).
