Vintage 10-strike matchbook cover (no matches) from the 1960's advertising Herbst Department Store which was located at 16 Broadway in downtown Fargo, North Dakota.
The store was opened in 1892. It expanded in the 1970's with branches in Bismark, Devils Lake, Jamestown, and the West Acres Shopping Center in Fargo. A fire destroyed the flagship downtown Fargo store in 1974 and Herbst wen out of business in 1982.
The matchbook front cover has the phone number and says "Herbst Fargo's Home Owned Department Store". The strike side has the Herbst 'H' logo and says "Fargo's Complete Shopping Center".
The inside of the matchbook says" Convenient Back Door Free Parking - Make An Appointment With Glamour In Our Beauty Salon - Visit Our Cafeteria".
The matchbook is a "Ten-Strike" made by Universal Match, St. Louis.
The matchbook cover is in very good condition. (see photos). The matchbook is empty and there are no matches, and the strike pad appears to be unused.
