Ship History: The 701 ft. 29,083 ton SS Andrea Doria entered service in 1953 and sank in 1956 off the coast of Nantucket after being hit by the Swedish American Line ship Stockholm.  1,660 Andrea Doria passengers and crew were rescued but 46 people died in the collision.

The 700 ft 29,191 ton SS Cristoforo Colombo (sister ship of the ill fated Andrea Doria) was built in 1953 and sailed with Italian Line until 1977 when it was sold to the government of Venezuela for use as an accommodation ship.  The ship was scrapped in 1983.

The 631 ft  23,940 ton sister ships MS Saturnia and MS Vulcania were built in 1925-1926.  The Saturnia sailed until 1965 when it was scrapped.  The Vulcania sailed until 1972 when it was damaged and laid up.  The ship sunk on its way to the scrappers in 1974.

The 667 ft 24,416 ton SS Conte Biancamano was built in 1925 and sailed until 1960 when it was scrapped.  The ship's bridge, ballroom, and some first class cabins were saved and reassembled as a display in the Italian National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan.
