This vintage linen postcard from the mid 1940's shows the control tower and a Northeast Airlines DC-3 airplane at Martha's Vineyard Airport on Martha's Vineyard island in Massachusetts.
The airport was built in 1942 during World War II as a Naval Auxiliary Air Station to train naval aviators. Dukes County took over the airport in 1946.
Northeast Airlines began flying to the airport in 1944. Northeast was originally called Boston-Maine Airways and was owned by the railroad of the same name. It changed its name to Northeast in 1940. The airline merged with Delta in 1972.
The card was printed on textured linen cardstock in the USA. It was published by New Bedford News Co, New Bedford MA.
The postcard is unused and in excellent condition.
