Synopsis: In this twelfth installment of the classic Nancy Drew Mystery Stories series by Carolyn Keene, Nancy is challenged by a group of New York City detectives to solve a baffling mystery involving a valuable message hidden centuries earlier by a French missionary. The search leads Nancy, along with her friends Bess Marvin and George Fayne, to the Illinois countryside, where they join a group of young archaeologists excavating ancient Native American burial mounds. As Nancy investigates the legend of a hollow oak tree that may hold the key to the mystery, she discovers that someone else is determined to uncover its secret first.

With a shadowy adversary stalking the archaeological camp and danger lurking at every turn, Nancy follows a trail of clues involving local history, a mysterious cave, and a long-lost treasure. Using her keen powers of observation, resourcefulness, and determination, Nancy races to uncover the truth behind the missionary's message before her rival can claim the prize. This 1972 revised edition features a substantially different storyline from the book's original 1935 version.
