Product description

19 page full color brochure for the 1974 Alaska cruises from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Alaska, The Inside Passage, and Canada aboard the American flag Pacific Far East Line sister ships ss Mariposa and ss Monterey.

The brochure includes many photos and descriptions of the ships interior and exterior and ports of call, description of dining on the ships and an example of a dinner menu, itineraries and cruise schedules, room rates, detailed partial deck plans for 4 decks (Boat deck, Promenade deck, Upper deck, Main deck), stateroom photos and diagrams, descriptions and pricing for tours in ports of call, and general information.

Condition: The brochure is in very good condition with a slight surface crease wrinkle on the front cover (see photos).

Ship History: the 14,812 ton, 604 ft sister ships ss Mariposa and ss Monterey were built in 1952/53 as the cargo ships Pine Tree Mariner (Mariposa) and Free State Mariner (Monterey).  Matson Lines acquired the ships in 1956 and converted them to passenger cargo liners with a capacity of 365 passengers.  The ships were sold to Pacific Far East Lines in 1971 and sailed with PFEL until 1978 when they were laid up.

In 1983 the Mariposa was sold to China Ocean Shipping which renamed the ship Jin Jang (and later Queen of Jin Jang). In 1992 the ship was renamed Heng Li.  It was withdrawn from service and sold for scrap in 1996.

The Monterey was sold to Aloha Pacific Cruises in 1986 and refurbished as strictly a cruise ship in 1987-88.  It was laid up again in 1989, and in 1990 it was sold to Star Lauro (which was absorbed into MSC Cruises in 1995) and cruised in the Mediterranean until 2006 when it was sold for scrap.
