Vintage mid 1970's, circa 1974-1975, "Ladies Night - Invitation Dance Card" from a "Cruise-N-Fly" Australia to Singapore, Malaysia, and South East Asia cruise aboard the Palanga Lines Soviet-flagged ship M.S. Khabarovsk (which was chartered to Palanga from Far East Shipping Co.)
The 2-sided paper dance card has the Palanga logo and the name of the ship on the front with an illustration of Latin dancers. The back side has a list of 12 different dance types. During the invitation dances women would write the names of their invited dance partners on the line next to the dance type. Dances included traditional ballroom dances (Slow Foxtrot, Last Waltz, etc), Latin dances (Rumba, Samba, Tango, etc), and more modern Rock and Pop influenced dances (like the Twist, Jive, etc).,
Palanga Lines was a short lived venture from approximately 1974-76 that marketed budget cruises aboard chartered Soviet ships to Western, primarily Australian, travelers.
Condition: The dance card is in very good condition. It has small 1/4" dog-ear creases on two of the corner tips, and a number written in pencil on the top right of the front side. (see photos). It is printed on regular paper and measures 9" x 6" (229mm x 152mm).
Ship History: The 5,235 ton 401 ft long M.S. Khabarovsk was built in East Germany in 1962 for the Soviet Union's Far East Shipping Company. It was one of 19 Mikhail Kalinin Class Soviet passenger ships built between 1958-1964 (the ships sailed with the 3 USSR lines: Far East Shipping, Black Sea Shipping, and Baltic Shipping) .
The Khabarovsk had accommodations for 333 passengers and 134 crew members, and sailed primarily on the Nakhodka Russia to Japan route. During the mid 1970's during the off season it was chartered to Palanga Lines for cruises between Singapore / Southeast Asia and Fremantle/Perth Australia. The ship sailed with Far East Shipping until 1988 when it was sold to Panama based Crosby Corp and sailed briefly as the MS Sound of Orient. The ship was taken out of service in 1989 and scrapped.
