Product Description
Photograph taken in the early 1990's showing the Great Lakes Carferry Service ship ss Badger entering the harbor at Ludington Michigan. The photo is 5" x 3.5 " (127mm x 89mm) and printed on Fujicolor darkroom photo paper.
The photo is in very good condition but it has some yellowing on the back due to age (see photos).
The ss Badger is still in operation as of 2024 and is the last remaining Lake Michigan classic railroad car ferry. Its sister ship the ss Spartan has been laid up in Ludington since 1979. The 410 foot 4,244 ton ships were built in 1952.
Trivia: the Badger was named after the University of Wisconsin Badger mascot, and the Spartan was named after the Michigan State University Spartan mascot.
The Badger was operated by the C&O Chessie railroad until 1983 when it was sold. In 2016 the U.S. Interior Department designated the ship as a National Historic Landmark.
