Scuff The Tugboat (And His Adventures Down The River), written by Gertrude Crampton, and illustrated by Tibor Gergely. A Little Golden Book, published by Golden Press, Western Publishing Co, Racine WI. Copyright 1955, 1946. Printed in the USA in 1975, Fourteenth Printing. Hardcover book, 24 pages.
Synopsis: Scuffy, a red-painted toy tugboat, is unhappy with his life in a toy store. He believes he is "meant for bigger things" than simply sitting on a shelf or sailing in a little boy's bathtub. The Man with the Polka-Dot Tie, who owns the toy store, and his little boy decide to give Scuffy his wish. They take him to a small brook and set him on his way.
Scuffy is thrilled as he sails down the brook, which soon grows into a stream, then a small river, and finally a large, mighty river. He is proud to sail past meadows, villages, and towns. However, as the river gets bigger and busier with other boats and a threatening flood, Scuffy starts to feel small and scared. When he finally sees the vast, endless ocean, he is overwhelmed and wishes he could return to the safety of the bathtub.
Just as he is about to sail out to sea, the Man with the Polka-Dot Tie and his little boy appear and rescue him. Scuffy is happily returned to his familiar bathtub, where he realizes that this is the perfect place for a red-painted tugboat and that home is where he truly belongs.
Condition: The book is in very good condition. There is a name written in the "this book belongs to" space on the inside. The inside pages are in excellent condition with no writing marks or creases. The spine and binding are also in very good condition. (see photos).
