Synopsis: In “A Cannon for Batman,” Bruce Wayne purchases an old chest at a charity auction and discovers a mysterious Civil War campaign patch bearing an emblem remarkably similar to Batman's symbol. Intrigued by its origin, Bruce asks Professor Carter Nichols to send him back in time to 1862. There he encounters the frontier hero Scalphunter and humanitarian Martha Jennings, who is attempting to deliver desperately needed medical supplies to Union troops. Batman and Scalphunter join forces to protect Jennings and her supplies while becoming caught up in the violence of the Civil War, including the Second Battle of Bull Run. When Batman is captured and tied to a cannon by Confederate soldiers, he must escape and help turn the tables on his captors. In the end, Martha's recognition of Batman's emblem reveals the surprising connection between the Civil War patch and the symbol Batman would one day make famous.

The issue also includes the Nemesis backup story, “Double or Nothing.” Nemesis targets a Las Vegas casino operated by one of the powerful members of the Council, but his plans become complicated when a mysterious woman seeking revenge against the same man enters the picture.
