Frank and Joe Hardy, teenage sons of well-known detective Fenton Hardy, become entangled in their first major mystery when a wealthy Bayport resident, Hurd Applegate, reports that his family’s priceless jewels have been stolen from the tower room of the Applegate mansion. Suspicion quickly falls on James “Red” Jackley, a known criminal, who is believed to be hiding out in the area.
The Hardy boys follow various clues and encounter obstacles ranging from false leads to personal danger. Along the way, they rescue a friend in trouble, uncover Jackley’s movements, and finally track him down. Before dying from injuries in a train accident, Jackley confesses that he did steal the jewels but insists he hid them in “the old tower.”
The boys return to the Applegate estate and search the tower thoroughly. At first they find nothing, but with persistence they eventually discover the stolen treasure hidden in a secret compartment, thereby clearing the name of others suspected and restoring the valuables to the Applegates.
The adventure establishes Frank and Joe as skilled young detectives, setting the stage for the long-running Hardy Boys series.
