Product description

Three Friends (1948 Edition), second grade textbook from the Health and Personal Development Series of the Curriculum Foundation Program. The book was written by Elizabeth Montgomery and Dorothy Baruch, and illustrated by Ruth Steed. William S. Gray was the Reading directory. Published by Scott, Foresman and Company in 1948 and printed in the U.S.A.  Hardcover book, 239 printed pages, 8" x 5 3/4" (203mm x 146mm).

Synopsis: The book is part of the “Health and Personal Development” series from Scott Foresman's iconic "Curriculum Foundation Program," Three Friends is a health and safety reader designed for second-grade students, featuring the familiar characters Johnny, Sue, and Sam. The narrative follows these three children through a year of seasonal activities, focusing on their physical growth, personal hygiene, and social development. Through gentle, everyday stories—such as playing in the snow, visiting a farm, or preparing for school—the book reinforces mid-century values regarding cleanliness, proper nutrition, and the importance of getting enough sleep.

Beyond physical health, the text places a heavy emphasis on "social-emotional" lessons, which was a progressive focal point for Scott Foresman at the time. The "three friends" navigate minor interpersonal conflicts, learn to share, and practice safety rules both at home and in their community. Accompanied by the classic, vibrant illustrations of Ruth Steed, the book serves as both a literacy tool designed to help young children build reading skills and a moral compass, aiming to help young post-war children understand their place in a cooperative, healthy society, and teaching them lessons about friendship, cooperation, manners, and everyday social situations.

Pages 154-160 are designed for elementary school teachers and include a vocabulary list, and a guide to "important health, safety, and personal development concepts introduced in Three Friends"

Condition: The book is in very good plus condition. It has a name written inside of the front cover.  The inside pages are in excellent condition with no marks or creases (see photos).
