Product description

Vintage 1960's 6-panel 2-sided brochure for the 1963-1964 Mapintour Mediterranean "Sea and Sun Cruises" fly/sea/hotel/ cruise tours to Greece, Rhodes, Cyprus, Israel, and Italy aboard the Typaldos Line cruise ships M/t Akropolis and M/t Athinai.

The brochure has a photo of the M/t Athinai (the former Grace Line SS Santa Rosa), descriptions of the cruise tour packages and day by day itineraries, room rates, and terms and conditions.

Condition: the brochure is in excellent condition (see photos).

Ship History: The 507 foot 9,135 ton sister ships SS Santa Paula (later ss Akropolis) and SS Santa Rosa (later ss Athinai) were built in 1932 for Grace Line, along with two other sister ships Santa Elena and Santa Lucia which sank in World War II.  The four sister ships featured winged funnels and were designed by Gibbs and Cox who also designed the SS America and SS United States which also had winged funnels.

The ships sailed with Grace Line until 1958 when they were replaced by two newer ships of the same name, and they were sold to the Greek Typaldos Line and renamed Akropolis and Athinai.  The ships were laid up in 1966 after Typaldos was forced to shut down following the sinking of one of its ferries.  The Akropolis was scrapped in 1971 and the Athinai was scrapped in 1989.
