The 23,500 ton Monarch Star was originally built as the Argentina in 1958 for the US flag Moore-McCormack Lines. Holland America bought the ship in 1973 and renamed it the Veendam. From 1976-78 it sailed for Monarch Cruise Lines as the Monarch Star and was returned to Holland America in 1978 and renamed Veendam again. In 1984 the ship was sold to Bahama Cruise Line and renamed Bermuda Star. In 1990 it was sold to Commodore Cruise Lines and sailed as the Enchanted Isle until 2000.The 8,500 ton Prinsendam was built in 1973. In October 1980 a fire broke out in the ship's engine room 120 miles off the coast of Alaska during a cruise. All 520 passengers and crew were safely rescued but the ship continued to burn and sank one week later.
